B12 is a powerful source of energy that is crucial for a healthy brain, immune system, and our metabolism.

B12 is not like other vitamins. It is found in animal products such as eggs, meat, shellfish, and dairy products.

What about the numbers?

About 15% of people do not get enough vitamin B12. # Vegetarians, the elderly in particular.

What does this lead to?

B12 is called the vitamin of energy for a reason. Insufficient intake of B12 leads to a decrease in the production of red blood cells, which in the earliest stages of deficiency causes feelings of fatigue, confusion and weakness.

Stephanie Middleberg, MD, Dietitian at Middleberg Nutrition in New York:

“The problem is that these signs are so vague that it is difficult to perceive them in the same way. Since they can be attributed to a variety of other possible triggers, most people don’t think they need to be checked 🔍

If these symptoms appear and remain for several weeks, it is best to consult your doctor and rule out other causes. Pay attention to dizziness, impaired thinking, and confusion”

“The symptoms of B12 deficiency often mimic the symptoms of dementia, such as memory loss, disorientation, and difficulty thinking,” says Middleberg.

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between B12 deficiency and dementia, especially since older people are at risk in both categories, which often overlap: between 75% and 90% of people who are diagnosed with B12 deficiency also have neurological complications, such as dementia.

But even when B12 deficiency affects young people, it still tends to resemble dementia.
