Nocturia and its causesđź“Ś
Nocturia is a condition in which a person wakes up more than once a night to go to the bathroomđź’ˇ
It is usually not dangerous, but it can affect sleep, performance during the day, and overall well-being.
📣 Nocturia occurs if you drink a lot of fluids at night or certain medications. And sometimes it is a symptom of an underlying disease — diabetes, prostatitis, diseases of the urinary tract.
Frequent urination at night may be due to the fact that the bladder is not emptied completely, so it fills up faster. But the opposite also happens: you want to go to the toilet earlier than the bladder is ready to empty — this happens in diseases of the bladder.
THE CAUSES OF NOCTURIA:
- The person drinks a lot of fluids, especially coffee, drinks with caffeine or alcohol
- Untreated type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Gestational diabetes that occurs during pregnancy
- Chronic heart failure
- Swelling of the legs
- Taking certain medications, such as diuretics, cardiac glycosides
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia in men is a nonmalignant overgrowth of the prostate
- Bladder obstruction — stones or inflammation that reduce bladder capacity
- Bladder infection or chronic urinary tract infection.
✔️ Sometimes the condition can be improved by drinking less fluids at night or taking diuretics at least 6 hours before bedtime.
If your ankles are swollen — to prevent fluid accumulation, you should elevate your legs so that they are above the level of your heart, or wear compression stockings.
đź“Ś Need to see a doctor if the person goes to the toilet more often than usual and if:
- There is no obvious cause, such as the person doesn’t drink a lot of fluids, alcohol or caffeine
- The problem disturbs sleep or interferes with daily activities;
- There are other problems with urination.
